2013 in Review: Remixes

As to be expected, a year such as 2013 which has included a ton of amazing new production has yielded a handful of awesome remixes. The twenty or so tracks below were all chosen because we felt the remix had truly elevated the song to the next level. The art of the remix requires a good ear and a level of creativity that improves on the original piece and can grab the listeners attention even though they may already be familiar with the orginal. Another great thing about remixes is that no artist really seems to outgrow the practice, this list is filled with young guns as well as some of our timeless favorites such as Alesso, Tommy Trash, and Cedric Gervais.

The goal of any remix is to breathe new life into a track that may have fallen out of the spotlight such as the Brillz and Z-trip take on the legendary Jay-z song Dirt Off  Your Shoulders or Vinnie Maniscalco’s remix of The Champ’s original Tequila. The tracks below are in no specific order but this is the perfect playlist for any pre-game or party as just about anyone should be able to find a song here they can relate too. Be sure to support all the artists below with a follow on Soundcloud and we cannot wait to see what refixes, re-takes, and remixes that 2014 will bring us!

Henry Fong’s 50k Bootleg Pack [FREE DL]

Woah has this guy exploded onto the scene! It couldn’t have been more than a few months ago when I heard Henry Fong ‘s Jump for the first time.  After showing the tune to a few of my friends they were equally impressed with the production and I knew something special was going to come of it. Since first hearing Jump the attention Henry has garnered has been something amazing.   Along with his fantastic originals he has also earned the duties to remix some of the game’s biggest artists including Zedd, Kill The Noise, and Dillon Francis to name a few.  His brand of hard hitting yet simplistic electro house is something that is unparalleled in the game of late.  Recently hitting the 50k follower mark on Facebook, Mr. Fong has released a bootleg pack of epic proportions.  This pack really has something for everyone as he mashes up some of today’s most popular beatport toppers with some of yesterday’s favorites, beatport toppers with other beatport toppers, beatport toppers with some of today’s pop, and any other combination you can think of.  Download the pack below for FREE, show the artist some love on his social media page, and get ready to see Mr. Fong climb the ranks of the dance music scene.

David Solano Feat. Angelika Vee – Who We Are

Does Spinnin’ Records every disappoint us? Definitely not. Out with another banger, we have the brilliant David Solano taking over stereo featuring the breathtaking vocals of Angelika Vee on the track called “Who We Are”. It’s one of those big progressive house tracks that once you press play, it consumes everyone in the room with it’s exceptionally strong presence and energy. The pumping beat and big drops will have have you dancing the night away as you sing along. It reminds me a little bit of Zedd’s new hit “Stay The Night” featuring Hayley Williams. It’s out on iTunes today and you can purchase it here!

Zedd-Stay The Night (Featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore)

Waiting for this brand new track called, “Stay The Night” by Zedd, featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore has had me on my toes for days. It’s certainly been one of those tracks that has been highly anticipated by the vast and never ending electronic dance music population for a while now. Especially when it comes to Zedd, you drop everything you’re doing and you give him all of your undivided attention because he’s just THAT good. Today was the day it dropped and after you listen to it, tell me. Are you gonna stay the night? I don’t know about you, but I’m down with that. “Stay The Night” has an extremely prominent and beautiful vocalist, as well as some killer music. So all in all, it’s bound to be the next #1, naturally. I fully support this unmatchable team.

Pre-order the Deluxe Edition of Zedd’s previous album, “Clarity”,where “Stay The Night” will be included. The album will be available on September 24th! Or buy the single on iTunes: here!

Don’t forget that Zedd is on the move around the world on his Moment of Clarity Tour right now! If he hasn’t came to your city yet, make sure you check out his tour dates schedule and get those tickets. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform when he came to Boston to the House of Blues and he played an absolutely outstanding show. You won’t want to miss the man, the myth, the legend and regret it later. Peep the remainder of his dates here.

Firefly In Review

With the weekend in the past and the Dover Woodlands shut down, the second year of Firefly is officially in the books, and there’s only more to come. After a sold out crowd of 65,000 people descended on the woods, Red Frog was able to secure the Woodlands as an exclusive venue for the next 10 years—a good sign for the future of the festival when combined with the fact that planning and ticket sales for next year have already begun. We’re gonna break it down for you after the jump, but for the TL;DR crowd: go. It’s only just starting to get good (even if my two favorite acts, The Lumineers and Earl Sweatshirt, bailed).

MMIBTY Exclusive Mix by DJ Scrap

Yesterday we brought you an exclusive premier by our friend Spaveech and today I have the pleasure of bringing you an exclusive mix by Boston’s own DJ Scr▲p (pronounced Scrap, real name Jhonathan Dossa).  As our guest mix series continues to grow, Scrap reached out to me interested in delivering something hot, something that would keep listeners entertained for over an hour. After our success featuring Richard Fraioli and his impressive guest mix last month, I was excited to see what DJ Scrap would bring. I knew nothing about Scrap, but what I did know is he has a significant following on SoundCloud, he’s a Boston-based DJ, and most of all he took the time to reach out to us in an effort to grow his name. He also won “Best Club DJ” for La Lista 2012.

After listening to Scrap’s mix several times, I was impressed by the song selection. It’s a very club-ready mix that features plenty of vocals and heavy drops. Since Scrap is of Latin decent and holds residencies at some of Boston’s top clubs (Naga and Underbar to name a couple), what I heard on this mix made sense to me – it has that certain flare you find with club DJs. You may look at the track list and consider it a “standard” compilation, but a lot of the records were new to me and mixed very well with each other. What’s cool to me was Scrap’s ability to play Go to War anthems like “LRAD” and “Thunder“, but to bring it back into melodic club tracks suck as Hardwell’s “Never Say Goodbye“, Axwell’s “Center of the Universe” and Tiesto’s “Take Me”. I can say with confidence I’ve added some new gems to my collection thanks to this mix and I love the way it ends with Zedd’s new remix of Empire of the Sun’s “Alive”.

Folks, check out this exclusive mix by DJ Scr▲p and make sure to show him some love. If you’re in the Boston area tune in to his social media pages to find out when he’s playing next!
