2011 in Review: Editors’ Selections & The Breakthrough Artists of the Year

Well, here we finally are. The last day of 2011. When we set out to do this 12 day long review of all the best in EDM, we were really trying to bring you the most comprehensive coverage of everything that went down in the wide world of electronic music. While everyone else is talking about Charlie Sheen and Steve Jobs as the biggest components of 2011, we were giving you the best tracks from the whole year among the best music videos, mixes, live performers and even more. We put a lot of work into all that content, but now it’s time for our most exciting post of the year. Not only did we all decide on which artists made the most significant impact in 2011 were, but we also get the opportunity, as the writers of this blog, to share with you our favorite tracks of the year. We did our best to avoid overlap so each set should be a pure aural experience full of different and futuristic sounds that we bumped our heads to all year long. I hope you enjoy and, as a friend of mine recently said, we look forward to going out of 2011 with a bang and waking up in 2012 with a wicked headache.

I couldn’t begin to tell you how many songs were added to my collection in 2011. My ears are always open for that next great track – whether it’s from a podcast, a music festival, a DJ at a club, or my friends passing on word. I keep a running list on my phone of songs I need to download and as an aspiring DJ I need to constantly consider what will keep people moving on the dance floor.

My top 10 list was extremely difficult to put together and it’s gone through several revisions. As one can see, my favorites are mostly House and Electro-House, but I made sure to include a couple other sub-genres. This list is in no particular order:

New Years Eve Dance Music Event Schedule

Everyone knows that NYE is the biggest night of the year to party. And considering the world is going to end next year, this is the last one we’re gonna have! Or at least we should party like it will be! Promoters and artists alike have taken notice and now epic late-night shows celebrating the tick of the second hand are a dime a dozen. Luckily for you, we’ve done all the legwork of finding THE BEST parties across the countries featuring some of our favorite artists and we hope you’ll be able to join us at one of them.

This New Year will be no different as he brings in two of electro house’s biggest emerging names in Zedd and Porter Robinson. The shows are already sold out as the fans here are die hard never passing up a chance to see those oh so pretty lights.

[expand title="Dec. 29-31: SnowGlobe Music Festival - South Lake Tahoe, CA"]

In true ski bum form The SnowGlobe Music Festival has gotten a late start to the game, but with epic powder and the headlining acts one can only wish they were lazy enough to not have NYE plans yet. With major headliners booked for awhile we are all patiently awaiting what kind of support SnowGlobe would be able to pull in. They surely didn’t disaapoint with the likes of Porter Robinson, Dillon Francis, Doctor P, Paper Diamond, Emancipator, and even Robotic Pirate Monkey all on the bill. Even if you aren’t a skier, this is an event not to be missed! First off, Lake Tahoe is world renown for its’ powder skiing, something that Epic Pass holders can take advantage all trip. Second, have you ever seen how the kids of Tahoe throw down, this is gonna be blackout central. And finally the quality of acts already announced rivals that of SnowBall’s inaugural event last March. Judging by the artists prior announced NYE events the lineup should look something like this…

[expand title="Dec. 31: Super You & Me w/ Laidback Luke, New York, NY"]

The wealth of talent descending on NYC is as insane as ever with every possible venue being booking by the biggest EDM acts in the world. Pacha NY has deemed Laidback Luke their guy to bring the new year and I couldn’t be happier. Laidback Luke is one of the most dynamic and talented DJ’s around with sets packed full of nonstop bangers. He is a personal favorite of mine and may be my top pick for events in NYC. It doesn’t hurt that Pacha NY is a state of the art venue that has hosted everyone in the game.

[expand title="Dec 31: New Years Eve Ball w/ Nero @ Webster Hall, New York, NY"]

I had the privilege to attend this event last year when Webster Hall played host to the Bloody Beetroots and had an absolutely stellar time. Webster Hall, easily one of my favorite venues of all time, has a night-long party featuring party favors, champagne, and a 6-hour premium top shelf bar (yes, that means Patrón and Hennessy) with the silver ticket for only $150. This and the fact that Nero will be throwing down the late night set makes this a must stop for your night. Drinks will be pouring till 6 I believe as is custom on NYE in NYC so if you already have plans for when the ball drops, you can still show up for the late-night show and keep the party going well into the daytime.

I can only image how wild this guy must get for New Years, I can only speculate how many drinks and drugs I would have attending this shit show.

SBTRKT Essential Mix and American Tour Dates

The man that has thrived through anonymity is in high demand these days after delivering us a healthy dose of fresh tracks all year round. So much so that the UK based producer got invited to play on BBC Radio 1′s infamous show, Essential Mix. The mix is full of undiscovered gems so be sure to checkout the tracklist below. He even ends the mix by dropping a brand new single entitled, Runaway! SBTRKT has a very distinct chilled out noise that makes for a very enjoyable essential mix.

He is about to commence on a 15 stop North American tour including stops in NYC, LA, Royale in Boston, and ending the tour at the Bluebird Theater in Denver. The complete tour is listed after the mix. SBTRKT has been quoted that he’d “rather not talk about myself as a person, and let the music speak for itself,” so I’ll stop talking and let you into SBTRKTs’ musical mind.

Adult Swim Presents: Unclassified – Free Mix Compilation

Welp, the  electronic music connoisseurs at Adult Swim have just released a (FREE!!!) massive compilation featuring tracks from Burial, Kode9, Untold, Geenus, Zomby, SBTRKT, XXXY, Pinch, and Ikonika. In addition to its heavy line-up of UK Bass producers, it spotlights several LA/Bay Area beat producers’ tracks that may sound familiar if you’re frequent viewer. Now this is not typical of what we post on MMIBTY, as most of our posts have been predominantly about up n’ coming electro-house and dubstep, but this compilation is a great introduction into the music I listen to on a daily basis, the music I DJ, the music that has consumed my life for these past few months and probably will for many years. To our readers, plan on seeing a lot more UK Bass, fringe house, Street Bass, and Booty bass featured on MMIBTY.

Can’t embed the mix but head over HERE to listen and grab the FREE compilation.

Countdown To Electric Zoo: A Preview of The Premier New York EDM Festival

What: Electric Zoo 2011
When: Labor Day Weekend – Sept. 2-4
Where: Randalls Island, New York

So, despite a long and so far very successful festival season as of this point in the summer, the East Coast has yet to really get their time to shine.  While I was lucky enough to attend Ultra Music Festival in March in Miami (although, is Miami even considered East Coast? Feels like another country…) and one of our contributors attended Camp Bisco just last weekend, the EDM scene has remained pretty dormant in the East as far as balls-to-the-wall events go.  Well, my friends, in these coming months all that is about to change.  Worth mentioning is that Identity Festival will be starting its tour soon and running through several dates on the East Coast including stops in Massachusetts (at which we will be in attendance), Dirty Jers (no offense, but Camden is just like that), and New York before it continues to travel to cities across the country with it’s small but sizable lineup of all-stars.  However, the main event for New Englanders and New Yorkers alike is Electric Zoo.  If you’ve never heard of this festival, let me tell you that my attendance last year changed my perspective on what was possible at an event like this (and what was possible on the man-made island (read: landfill) it is held on).  Touting a stellar lineup and sporting some of the most friendly and diverse collection of party-goers I’d seen across the festivals I’ve attended, Electric Zoo 2010 proved that NYC is capable of throwing down just as hard as Miami and LA had been doing for years.  Electric Zoo 2011 is clearly out to do it again.

This year, the festival will be headlined by the usual group of crowd-pleasers: Tiesto, David Guetta, and Armin Van Buuren.  However, the real meat of the festival is where things start to get interesting.  This year, Rusko and AN21 & Max Vangeli have both earned main stage gigs, along with Sub Focus and Alesso.  I am very impressed with the Zoo planning committee for putting these artists on a main stage alongside international megastars as they certainly have a very solid following (and I think Rusko deserves a main stage gig at every festival!).  Main stage will also play host to Afrojack and Calvin Harris and personal favorite Benny Benassi.  Off the main stage, Hilltop Arena will feature a lot of the big trance names from last year such as ATB and Marcus Schultz but will also feature legendary producers Boys Noize and Diplo, which are MUST SEE ACTS.  Sunday School tent looks a little thin to me this year; while it will hold Carl Cox there on Friday and Richie Hawtin on Sunday, there is little reason for me to venture over there this year with no Claude Von Stroke in sight.  Finally, the Red Bull Riverside tent will be the stage for Crookers, Bart B More, Skrillex, Porter Robinson, Kid Sister (!), SBTRKT, EDX, Hardwell, and Michael Woods over the three days.  Makes sense that it was my go-to tent last year.  Also, Electric Zoo will host “bands” this year, including Chromeo and Colorado’s Big Gigantic, which should make for some fun distractions.

Notable absences are Wolfgang Gartner, Laidback Luke, Steve Aoki, Nero, Claude Von Stroke, Glitch Mob, and Avicii, just to name a few.  While I am surprised that EZ wasn’t able to book these artists, I’m sure there is adequate reason (ID Fesitval…) and the lineup is stellar nonetheless.  As a heads up, the last day to buy tickets that don’t include transportation (it’s complicated, details on the site) is July 21st – or a week from today – so get on buying your ticket if you have any brain to you.  I know they’re expensive but you know you wanna go… [Also, if you're hot and a girl you can stay with me... ]

Get all the details and buy your tickets here: Electric Zoo Festival 2011

Since this is a music blog, I guess I have to leave you with some music.  I think it would be impossible to put together enough songs here to get you excited for Zoo so I will just post two of my favorite sets from last year.

First, Diplo.  Hip-hop.  Dubstep.  Everything in between.  If this doesn’t get you excited to see this guy, I don’t know what will.  Oh wait… I do.  Moombahton.

Diplo – Electric Zoo 2010 Set

I would post Boys Noize’s set here but unfortunately I have never been able to find it.  Instead I’ll leave you with trance legend Armin Van Buuren’s set, which I have fond memories of closing out the festival with last year.  Plus he plays SHM’s “One” to close, which was fitting considering it was THE song of last year’s event.

FINALLY FRIDAY SPECIAL: Electronic Rap Remixes

Well, I’ve been amassing quite a collection of rap songs that have popular electronic songs as the beat so I figured it’d be worth my time to share a couple of these gems with you.  Personally, before I had any clue what electronic music was all about, I was quite the rap fan and so I still have an ear for a quality hip-hop song when I hear it.  Some of these songs are bangers and others are just great for some chilling out but they all take what we love about the original and add in some kickin’ rhymes.  (You’ll notice none of these are mashups… I don’t fux with that)

This first one is off the Peanut Butter & Swelly mixtape, the latest contribution from “Chiddy” and superproducer Xaphoon Jones.  Xaphoon, in my opinion, is the only reason Chiddy Bang is a household name today: his beats kill it and if you doubt it, check out his own work (such as this song) and you’ll see what I’m talking about.  On this one, Xaphoon takes the infectious song “I Can’t Stop” by Flux Pavilion and turns it into a beat for Chiddy to freestyle over.  Tight song.

Chiddy Bang – I Can’t Stop

Next up I have a song that’s been all over the internet lately.  While The Glitch Mob remixed this song themselves on their Drink the Sea Pt II mixtape with samples from at least 6 different hip-hop artists, King Fantastic, a duo consisting of “Killer” Reese One and Troublemaker, takes a slightly different approach on this one by bring his own unique style to it.  The lyrics match up with the name of the song which is nice and gives the overall song a real nice flow.  P.S. KF calls their genre of music “Westcoastsynthesizerbeachbumgangstermusic”. Yup.

The Glitch Mob – Drive It Like You Stole It (King Fantastic Remix)

This next one I personally find to be utterly hilarious and the first time I heard it I literally laughed out loud.  I actually heard it on the radio but it stuck in my head the whole day so I ended up finding it online and it started to really grow on me.  This one might be hit or miss for a lot of people but give it a chance, its a pretty good party song and will definitely give everyone who hears it a “WTF?” moment.  I’m not even going to tell you what this is a remix of because if you don’t know, it’s probably a lost cause anyways.

T$ – All Star ft Joe Moses & DJ Mustard

Finally, and this one is my favorite, I have a remix of the track I posted pretty recently by SBTRKT called “Wildfire.”  A not-so-secret secret of mine is that I love Drake.  Absolutely love him.  Well, maybe not the crooney stuff but when he throws down, he fucking THROWS DOWN.  True example right here – takes a song that I never thought could be a hip-hop beat (although now it makes a lot of sense) and absolutely murders it.  Unfortunately we only get one verse from him but the rest of the song is so good it doesn’t matter.  This one might be on repeat for you guys for a while.

SBTRKT – Wildfire (Remix ft. Drake & Little Dragon)

BONUS: This one’s an oldie but if you don’t have it you need to pick it up.  Busta Rhymes absolutely murders this track by Tiesto & Diplo with his fast-paced flow.  Like King Fantastic did on the Glitch Mob remix, he takes the song and works the lyrics into it adeptly, making this one another sick party song.  Video is awesome too.

Tiesto & Diplo ft Busta Rhymes – C’mon (Catch ‘Em By Surprise)

If you guys have any ideas for some more hot rap remixes, drop me a line at brian@mymusicisbetterthanyours.com or leave a comment below.  Would love to make this a regular deal… SHIT IS HOT!
