2012 In Review: Electro-House

If I had to pick one category of dance music to listen to for the rest of my life it would probably be Electro-House. Nothing gets me ready to party quite like some hard-hitting bass, deep four-on-the-floor kick drums, wobbles, chain saw buzz attacks, and if there’s still time maybe some female vocals or melodic synths layered on top. But let’s stick with those first four to begin with. Our list for this year’s best of Electro-House speaks for itself. We chose songs that we both enjoyed, but that were also popular among fans of the heavier side of House music. I think you’ll recognize a majority of the songs, but with any list there may be a few surprises. We were treated to gems by juggernauts in Wolfgang Gartner, Sander van Doorn, and Tommy Trash, but we also had the pleasure of witnessing some break-out action by guys like Torro Torro, Firebeatz, and John Dahlback. Check the list and let us know what you think! In no particular order…

  1. Firebeatz – Dear New York
  2. Wolfgang Gartner – Love & War
  3. Sander van Doorn – Kangaroo
  4. Tommy Trash – Truffle Pig
  5. Wax Motif & Neoteric – Go Deep (Torro Torro Remix)
  6. John Dahlback – Zeus
  7. Kaskade – Llove (Dada Life Remix)
  8. Avicii – Silhouettes (Lazy Rich Remix)
  9. Mord Fustang – Windwalker
  10. Revolvr – Beat Goes On (Charles Deluxe Remix)

[Ticket Giveaway] Wintersalt Festival, San Francisco, CA

Just when you thought we couldn’t possibly have any more giveaways to do, we just got the greenlight to give away a pair to San Francisco’s year end blowout Wintersalt Festival. The Bay Area has stacked up quite a lineup for the two day festival which features big name partystarters like Zedd, Dillon Francis and Diplo along with plenty of other interesting acts (and MMIBTY favorites) like Paper Diamond, DJ Shadow, Travis Barker and Mixmaster Mike (of the Beastie Boys) and up-and-comers REVOLVR, K Theory and Viceroy. Alongside the music will be art installations like you’d expect from the culturally-rich city, all leading up to New Year’s Eve on Monday, when Wintersalt’s promoters Eye Heart SF take the party to the Streets of San Francisco, where headlining DJ A-Trak and support from DJ Craze and SF’s Sam Isaac will ring in 2013 right. I’m upset that I will be unable to attend but I’m excited to have the opportunity to give someone else the chance to have a fantastic weekend of music and fun to end 2012 on. It’s going to be a short but sweet contest so we’re going to try something a little different than usual… Instructions below. Get all the details on the festival here.

Tweet why you think you should win with the hashtag #winwintersalt and mention our twitter handle @mmibty in your tweet. Winner will be announced on Saturday, December 23rd. One pair of tickets is up for grabs so get tweeting people!

Disclaimer: If you don’t have Twitter, maybe you should get one. They’re free, you know.

Artist Spotlight: TJR

Maybe it’s because I’ve been on a funky House/Tech-House kick lately or maybe it’s because he just came to Boston where he played Splash Ultra Lounge, but I felt the world needed some more exposure to DJ/producer TJR (real name TJ Rozdilsky).

Camp Bisco: The Hippie Fest for People Who Like Electronic Music

Love them or hate them, The Disco Biscuits have been an omnipresent force in electronic music far before the scene became what it is today. The electronic jam band has been hosting their own festival going on 11 years now and Camp Bisco has become a staple on the EDM festival circuit. Known for the “wooks” (or dreaded, dirty hippies) who follow Bisco like a fox follows a rabbit, the band’s longstanding presence in the scene has allowed them to forge connections with all realms of the music world, allowing for them to put together a spectacular lineup every year. Their diversity in the lineup is as present this year as ever.

REVOLVR Brings “Beats Inside My Head” For Round 2

This song was one that we posted very early on after starting this blog and was the true moment when I realized REVOLVR’s potential as a producer. Ever since, we’ve followed him along his path to success in the electro house arena, continually putting out floorbanger originals and remixes and putting together one of my favorite podcasts The Chamber on a monthly basis. This VIP remix of the Scooter & Lavelle original brings the same dark intensity as his first remix with a twist, as we always find when a producer decides to put together a VIP mix. Best part is he’s giving this one away as a freebie through his SoundCloud, which is much appreciated. Enjoy.

Scooter & Lavelle ft. Sue Cho – Beats Inside My Head (REVOLVR VIP Remix)

Fun. – We Are Young (REVOLVR Remix)

We’ve loved electro producer REVOLVR over here at MMIBTY for a long while. He continually impresses with his amazing originals like “The Beat Goes On” and “Beats Inside My Head” (the guy likes beats…). He also produces one of the most amazing electro podcasts available today in “The Chamber”. Yesterday, after creating some buzz on his Facebook page (and declining that the remix he was about to drop was of Gotye, to everyone’s relief), he dropped this remix and requested only 150 shares to unlock it for free download. He has reached his goal, understandably, and here we are with a free, awesome remix of Fun.’s single. I was surprised when few jumped to remix this song (maybe because Alvin Risk did such a great job) but REVOLVR injects such a perfect balance of melodic chords and electro drive. If you’re a DJ, play this one out in one of your sets… I’ll guarantee it’s a hit with your crowd.
