Tuesday January 24, 2012 was a night I had been highly anticipating for weeks: The #5 DJ act in the world (as of this past Fall according to DJ Mag’s Top 100), Above & Beyond, were coming to Boston’s Royale nightclub. As a frequent listener of their weekly podcasts (which span OVER TWO HOURS), and as someone who constantly listens to the artists on their record label, I was excited to see what they could do in a club environment. Of course I say this only after having seen part of their set at Electric Zoo 2011. Well before the night arrived, tickets to the show had sold out. ABB were ready to rock the place. Britain’s most popular DJ/producer collective, Above & Beyond, have embarked on an epic 20-date bus tour that started on January 17th and comes to Boston’s Royale nightclub tomorrow night. This is the first of two legs of their 2012 Group Therapy North America Tour and as the #5 DJ act in the world (wedged between Deadmau5 and Avicii…), you can expect many of these dates to sell out, just like Boston’s show tomorrow.
Centered around their critically acclaimed second artist album, Group Therapy, (“the biggest artist album of the year” according to UK dance music bible Mixmag), which features Billboard dance chart hits like “Sun & Moon” and “Thing Called Love”, Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy show takes the DJ set up into the realm of concert theater – with emotive visuals telling the tale of the tracks being played and live video messaging from the band adding to the story-telling theme. Also featuring previously unheard and exclusive club mixes of the tracks on the album, the Group Therapy tour will be a unique dance floor experience for Above & Beyond’s legion of North American fans.
Readers of this blog will realize we are scarce with our selections of Trance/Progressive songs, but Above & Beyond always manage to produce amazing tracks themselves in addition to their record label Anjunabeats which is quickly taking over the EDM world by featuring artists such as Arty, Mat Zo, Nitrous Oxide, Sunny Lax, Boom Jinx, and many more. I tune in to their weekly podcast, “Trance Around the World“, as often as I can and I’m excited for this show because I haven’t seen the trio in a club setting ever.
Whether you’re going to the Boston show, checking them out somewhere else in North America, or just a casual fan – you know you need to keep these guys on your radar. Find me tomorrow!
