After headlining Jay Z’s semi-new festival, Made In America, alongside Beyonce & Nine Inch Nails, dance music’s most polarizing figure, Deadmau5, has released what may be the finest display of talent we’ve seen from him in a while. In Pets 1 & 2, another long, melodic symphony, Zimmerman may very well have inadvertently created a trilogy for himself (Strobe and The Veldt compromising the first two parts). Progressive arpeggios overlay waves of melodic synthwork and vocal chops for seven minutes until things take a turn for the darker, more new wave Deadmau5 style and the song wraps up in an assortment of bass heavy chords and erie melodies. Amidst the sea of new albums coming out this fall, Deadmau5 has made no announcements, but I’d be willing to bet that his next full length work will be headed up by Pets.
Are you guys as excited as we are for Deadmau5 to release some long awaited new tracks? As of today, June 25th, he’s as free as bird from Ultra Records now that his “run off” period has expired. Deadmau5 aka Joel Zimmerman, is now able to paint the town red and is clearly as giddy as a school girl about it from the looks of his multiple social media accounts. The dude has been 100% open and honest about his thoughts on the conflicts between him and his partnership at Ultra Records, and at times his comments have been a little controversial. But I love it. Here are just a few tweets that express his dissatisfaction with these guys:
“@deadmau5: Haven’t been releasing any new stuff coz of a dick move on a “run off” period with a certain record company, but times runnin out. We good.” (Feb. 9, 2013)
“@deadmau5:got a beautiful track goin.” (June 6, 2013)
“@deadmau5: cant wait to release this one.. for reals… just let me wait until my “run off” period with ultra records ends. f those guys. june 25th. ” (June 6, 2013)
As you can see, these issues have been springing up for a while. And with his pure pleasure, today he happily tweeted:
Zimmerman has been working diligently in his temporary studio to produce some new stuff while he’s been patiently awaiting his release so he can start a new chapter in his music career. Although we’re unsure of when we’ll be able to get the full tracks, he posted a few previews of his new projects on his Soundcloud page, titled “f*ckmylife”. It has quite the ring to it, doesn’t it? From my personal opinion and the reaction of others, they’re going to be HUGE hits, especially because he’s been putting his blood, sweat, and tears into these bad boys through all of the bull Ultra Records has seemed to put him through. You can listen in on “Assume Control”, “Moog Bass + Modular”, “Suite 03″, “Monophobia”, and his collaboration with Kill The Noise, “Killthemau5″ down below! Everyone is giving some amazingly positive feedback and Deadmau5 is extrememly amped to get the ball rolling. I’m excited for him and you all should be too. He’s got a lot of potential and it’s all about to show…big time. He’s definitely got this one in the bag. Watch out everyone, there’s a new mau5 in town.
Ultra Music Festival is a wrap and although many of us could only watch it on YouTube, we all feel a little depressed that it’s over. Seeing the best in the world, pull out all of the stops is what makes Ultra the premiere music festival here in America. We heard countless unreleased tracks, saw some unusual collaborations, all while drinking with our closest friends on couches across the country. Well now you can relive the experiences as we have collected sets throughout the weekend that you can stream and download. Many of these sets were posted by our friends or other blogs and we have simply compiled them all in one place. We would rather work smart than work hard if we can! Download them all if you want and be sure to check out the tracklists below!

2 Chainz is pretty hard to take seriously. I mean, look at this screenshot from his latest video. Formerly known as Tity Boi, the Georgian rapper has been making quite a splash in hip-hop this year with some major collaborations with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as releasing his debut studio album Based on a T.R.U. Story. So regardless what you think of him, he’s doing big things in mainstream hip-hop and the latest is his single “I’m Different”. The beat is literally begging to be toyed with and trill master MiMOSA takes on the duties with this trap-tastic remix. I have mixed feelings on a lot of MiMOSA’s work, but this jam is club (and bedroom) ready: get ready to jump around.
BONUS: This Ghosts N’ Stuff trap bootleg is a blast and a half. Grab it for free courtesy of i.V.
Today’s second entry wrapping up the year of 2012 in dance music covers some of the best songs from the world of Trance and Progressive House. Often as the lines between genres become more and more blurred, these two categories have been grouped together due to similar characteristics. Unlike their Electro-House and Big Room House cousins, Trance and Progressive songs often clock in at six to eight minutes in length and are more complex in construction; you’ll hear more than just a build-up and drop followed by another build-up and drop. I’ve often said Trance producers are the most talented out there in terms of both skills and creativity, writing these intricate and sprawling tunes that contain so many minute details that really take a trained ear to focus in on. The more time I spend listening to dance music, the more I find myself looking for these tunes that make me wonder how these producers are able to induce chills the way they do.
Just like our selections for the Top 20 House songs of 2012, the tracks we’ve chosen for Trance/Progressive are ones we felt made a big impact in the dance world this year. There are most definitely some we’ve left off, but this should be a comprehensive list of how the Trance and Progressive scene looked in 2012 and of course we were partial to some of the tracks that may have snuck by you (“Isla Margarita” and “Aura” for example). Artists like Norin & Rad and W&W have really started to emerge as top-tier talents, while veterans like Above & Beyond and Eric Prydz continue to show us why they’re legends. You may have overlooked a couple tracks here so make sure to dive right in and tell us what you think! In no particular order:
1. Dash Berlin – Waiting (W&W Remix)
1a. W&W – Lift Off!
2. Eric Prydz (Pryda) – Every Day (Fehrplay Remix)
3. Deadmau5 – There Might be Coffee
4. Mat Zo & Porter Robinson – Easy
5. Sunny Lax – Isla Margarita
6. Velvetine – The Great Divide (Myon & Shane 54 Summer Of Love Mix)
7. Norin & Rad – Pistol Whip
8. Genix – Aura
9. Arty, BT, Nadia Ali – Must Be The Love
10. Above & Beyond – On My Way to Heaven (Above & Beyond Club Mix)
And here are all the tracks mixed together in one crispy package –
