Meltdown Music Festival 2013 In Review

So I would just like to start out by saying – Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas knows how to turn the fuck up. No questions asked. And I’m not just saying that because I’m from here but well… having gone to many of these Full Access, Prototype Industries, and Disco Donnie Presents, etc. shows – I feel like I’m deserving enough to be considered a bit of a connoisseur of the Texas EDM scene and can deem DFW as a huge factor of it. I had attended Meltdown last year and although they changed the venue this time around (which was extremely last-minute – two days before the show…YIKES!) there was no stopping to the crazy momentum they have kept up these past few years, especially with the big names they bring out.

Continue reading to hear about how a press pass turned into being escorted around the festival grounds by duo, Gent & Jawns + more crazy stories and a review of the set’s I caught which include Kill Paris, Candyland, Carnage, Deniz Koyu, Adventure Club, Zomboy, 12th Planet, Morgan Page, Flux Pavilion, Bro Safari, and Justice.

Meltdown Music Festival brings ‘We Are All Together’

Spring has sprung, summer is on its way, and with this, comes the unification of beautiful people all emerging together for the sole purpose of amazing music a.k.a. festival season. The EDM industry is broadening as a whole and because of this many different festivals have come about all across the US including one that is coming forth for its consecutive year, Meltdown. Meltdown music festival is happening on Saturday, the 27th of April at Quiktrip Park in Grand Prairie bringing Justice (DJ set), Flux Pavilion, Bro Safari, Gents and Jawns, + many more, and yes that’s Grand Prairie, TEXAS I’m talking about. MMIBTY has been representing a different side of the states for a while now; being a new writer, I would like to introduce a more southern aspect to things around here. Bringing together the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas EDM community – Prototype Industries, Full Access Events, and Disco Donnie Presents are presenting some big acts to Texas just like they have in the past with EDM related events such as, U.M.E (Ultimate Music Experience in South Padre Island, TX), Sun City Music Festival (El Paso, TX), and plenty of other headliners in Concert Halls/Nightclubs around this wonderful state. They don’t say everything’s bigger in Texas for nothing, that’s for sure.

2012 In Review: Dubstep

Dubstep, now a house-hold name, has been an integral part of enlarging the EDM culture in our country and continues to be a thriving genre of music distinguishable musically in its own right. The term dubstep has many different interpretations to all people of all walks and colors and is a hotly disputed genre. But this evening we would like to take a stab at what we consider to be the best dubstep of 2012. Although times have changed and we have been introduced to so many new artists due to the increasing access to music production technology and new and improved ways to share these products and software with, this list certainly consists of some of the forerunners that now have become household names such as Skrillex, Flux Pavilion, and Monsta . So please take some time and observe this nice list that we have put together for you, we welcome comments and polite discussion so please feel free to tell us what you think. We are very excited for what 2013 has to bring us in music and culture.

Adventure Club – Need Your Heart (Minnesota Remix)

It should be no secret to our longtime readers what my thoughts on Adventure Club are, so I will save my breath here. Hopefully, though, my thoughts on Minnesota are likewise known, as different as they may be. The Santa Cruz native produces dreamy dubstep bordering on future bass and his sound has evolved even more over the years into some of the most melodic chillwave remixes and originals around. His latest remix of Adventure Club’s “Need Your Heart” is just one of those. Calling the original obnoxious is an understatement, with the only redeeming quality being the beautiful vocals provided by Kai. Minnesota sets the stage with synth soundscapes leading up to the would-be drop, which gets replaced with wide, vibrating harmonies creating an atmosphere of bliss that lasts for over seven awesome minutes. Like much of his music, it comes as a free download once you show him some love on his Facebook page, so please do that. This track is worth it and Minnesota deserves all the love he can get.

Brush up on Cry Wolf and Candyland‘s great remixes of this track here.

Keys n Krates Take on the Bush

I was just sitting here wondering what the rest of the weekend would bring (yes, mine started early in the day yesterday) and what other great music I may hear living in the beautiful hile high when a magnificent thought came to me. What the hell are Keys n Krates up too!? So logically I hop over to their Soundcloud since I haven’t heard anything from them since their massive Adventure Club remix three months back. Well to my surprise this little gem was uploaded less than an hour ago. And from just hosting Lotus at Red Rocks Amphitheater, I couldn’t be more excited to hear my favorite remixers take on Bush Pilot. The track takes on that moombah vibe that we all have grown to love.

As a little bonus I have included a 30-min mix by Flowinsky of Keys n Krates entitled Pancakes and Swerve. The mixtape takes some of the best hip hop tracks around and slams them into a trap masterpiece. The tracklist can be found on the Soundcloud link. Enjoy!

Any of you avid readers should know by now my tumultuous relationship with the dubstep duo Adventure Club. I’ve taken a good deal of time and energy to express how I feel about how they’ve developed as artists, with their progression from a chillwave sound (that I loved) to a much heavier sound (that I don’t). Without getting into too much detail, my vocal dissent with their increasingly noisy style reached their ears through whatever means and I’m sure they must have at least absorbed it, especially considering they owe the bulk of their success to support from blogs like this one. In fact, they actually retweeted my last rant post and it became quite a popular post because of that. Now, I know that bloggers such as myself may have a reputation for being cocky behind a keyboard (I’m pretty cocky in real life too) but there’s no doubt that we have measurable influence in the music realm. So I’m not saying I had anything to do with AC’s latest remix sounding like their older, more favorable stuff, but I hope I did. I hope at the very least the return to their roots on this remix made them understand where I was coming from in my criticism. I like this one a lot. I’m actually relieved that I can finally say that about an AC track again.
