This past weekend I had a chance to get back in the beat lab. Because I’m currently feeling a bit burnt out on festivals I decided not to attend San Francisco’s largest musical event that took place Friday-Sunday at Golden Gate Park: Outside Lands. For those who don’t know, Outside Lands offers a very diverse musical lineup each year, while also offering attendees some delicious food, local drinks, and even a comedy tent. While the festival takes place in the middle of the Summer, the weather is often temperate and lacks the heat that those who attend Coachella or Lollapalooza might be used to. I completely respect the artists who play Outside Lands and the people who attend, but after checking it out the past couple years I’ve decided it’s not among my favorite festivals.
So during a self-proclaimed “me day”on Saturday, I curated a playlist of my current favorite tracks and organized them in a fashion that flows nicely and keeps asses shaking. Compared to some of my previous mixes, Volume 16 spans almost two hours and remains heavy in the world of Funk and Nu Disco. BPMs span from 120 to 125 and you’ll find 4×4 beats throughout the duration of the mix.
Many of the songs featured have been released in the past year, but don’t be surprised if you hear some slightly older gems or new takes on classics. Notables, for me, include Jax Jones’ “House Work”, a House rework of “Black Magic Woman”, and perhaps my favorite track of the Summer – “Touch Me” by Poupon.
